چکیده

While the effect of soil temperature and moisture on soil CO2 efflux (Ec) has been widely investigated, the relationship between Ec and soil carbon (C), root, and stand parameters has not been comprehensively examined or quantified across extensive spatial and temporal scales. We measured Ec in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands located on the South Carolina Coastal Plain across sites, seasons, and ages. Concurrent with Ec measurements, we monitored soil temperature (top 10 cm) and soil moisture (top 10 cm) along with mineral soil C concentration [C], coarse woody debris (CWD), root surface area, and root volume in the top 20 cm of the mineral soil below the measurement chamber. We also examined the effects of stand age, stand volume, and site quality on Ec. Using linear regression analysis, we determined that Ec was most highly correlated with soil temperature alone ðR 1⁄4 0:263Þ. Mineral soil [C] alone explained a small, but significant amount of Ec variance ðR 1⁄4 0:026Þ. When all variables were considered simultaneously, only soil temperature ðR 1⁄4 0:249Þ, mineral soil C ðR 1⁄4 0:0378Þ, and root surface area ðR 1⁄4 0:0149Þ explained a significant amount of variance in Ec. Other variables tested were not significantly correlated with Ec. Mineral soil C concentration was greater in samples taken directly adjacent to trees (on beds) compared with samples between rows (interbeds), which partially explained why we observed greater Ec rates next to trees. With increasing stand age, CWD decreased and root surface area increased suggesting that opposite shifts in total root and microbial respiration over time are responsible for the lack of correlation between Ec and stand age. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. Soil CO2 efflux in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations on the Virginia Piedmont and South Carolina Coastal Plain over a rotation-length chronosequence

We measured soil surface CO2 efflux (Fs) in loblolly pine stands (Pinus taeda L.) located on the Virginia Piedmont (VA) and South Carolina Coastal Plain (SC) in efforts to assess the impact climate, productivity, and cultural practices have on Fs in the managed loblolly pine ecosystem. The effect of stand age on Fs was examined using a replicated chronosequence approach in which stands ranging ...

Temporal and Spatial Patterns of Soil Co2 Efflux, Soil Carbon, and Root Biomass Associated with Bedding in Young Loblolly Pine Plantations

We measured soil CO2 efflux (Fs) in four loblolly pine plantations in the coastal plain of South Carolina in an effort to understand how site preparation, drainage, and microclimate affect Fs, root biomass, and soil carbon pools during early stand development. All plantations were site prepared: sheared, raked, and bedded. Soil CO2 efflux, temperature (Ts), moisture (θ), root biomass (Rb), coar...

Soil C 0 2 efflux across four age classes of plantation loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L . ) on the Virginia Piedmont

Soil C 0 2 efflux resulting from rnicrobinl and root respiration is a major cornponent of the forest C cycle. In this investigation, we examined in detail how soil C 0 2 efflux differs both spatially and temporally with rcspeit to stand age for loblolly pine (Pinus rrrecio LA.) plantations on the Virginia Pied~rront. Througlrout a 12-month period, efflux rates were rncasured both near the base ...

Whole-tree and forest floor removal from a loblolly pine plantation have no effect on forest floor CO2 efflux 10 years after harvest

Intensive management of southern pine plantations has yielded multifold increases in productivity over the last half century. The process of harvesting merchantable material and preparing a site for planting can lead to a considerable loss of organic matter. Intensively managed stands may experience more frequent disturbance as rotations decrease in length, exposing the stands to conditions tha...
